Love! It’s SHOW and Tell

Holly always says how much she loves her family’s fluffy feline, Aunt Gladys. She tells the little kitty she’s the best fur baby in the world. But are her words of affection a genuine show of love?

When Holly comes home from school with her best friend, Clara, they are super excited because tomorrow is Show and Tell. Holly wants to share her excitement with Mom, but only Aunt Gladys is waiting to greet her. Holly’s mom left a note, in the form of a picture puzzle, explaining she is away for just a short while to help Grandma. The note also says to snack on the homemade cookies and milk, feed Aunt Gladys, go to the neighbor if there’s an emergency, and be sure to look by the door. That’s where her mom left a bubble wand, and Clara squeals in delight. The girls love blowing bubbles!

Holly and Clara scarf down a few cookies and then run to the yard to search for Show and Tell items, leaving Aunt Gladys behind. After some deliberation, the two pick a pumpkin and fill it with flowers. Then it’s time for fun, blowing big bubbles and tiny bubbles. The girls play until Holly’s mom comes home, then Holly proudly shows off the flower-filled pumpkin. Mom’s impressed and tells Holly to take it inside. When Holly opens the patio door, she finds a messy surprise – milk glasses tipped over, puddles of milk on the floor, and broken cookies everywhere.

Holly swears she and Clara didn’t do it. It had to be Aunt Gladys! Holly shakes her finger at her fur baby, calls her naughty, and threatens to put her in a kitty crate for the rest of the night. That’s when Mom steps in and gently delivers a much-needed lesson about love.

Mom explains that real, genuine love is a lot like Show and Tell. Love is action. You have to do loving things, not just say the words. So when Holly didn’t feed Aunt Gladys or give her much attention, Holly didn’t do any of the things that would make Aunt Gladys feel loved.

Hope! More Than Wishful Thinking

Holly learns the hard way that crossing her fingers and hoping for the best is no strategy for success.

The night before an important English test, Holly socializes more than she studies. On the day of the exam, Holly hopes the test won’t be too hard and she really hopes to score big.

But when her grade is posted online, she sees a big fat D with a plus sign. Staring at her grade and feeling a mix of disappointment and disbelief, Holly tells her mom that she had hoped really, really hard but it looks like that wasn’t enough.

Mom must gently remind her daughter that wishful thinking rarely works by itself. If Holly wants to make her dreams come true, she has to do more than hope. She has to be an active participant by staying motivated, putting in the effort, and being resilient. What Holly needs is a different kind of hope. A HOPE that is built on Hard work, Optimism, and Perseverance, so Eventually her dreams can become reality.

Joy! You Find What You Look For

Holly is having a miserable, rotten day!

She forgot her “show” for Show and Tell. She dropped her sandwich on the floor. She had to wait and wait and wait because Mom was the very last car in the pickup line, and she’s soaked to the bone from the rain. Nothing good has happened to her all day!

When Holly climbs into the backseat of the family car, she gives her mom an earful. She doesn’t even bother to acknowledge the cupcake and juice Mom has waiting for her. Holly is completely focused on all the things that are terrible or awful or boring.

Mom really doesn’t want to spend the car ride home listening to a litany of her daughter’s complaints and grievances. To lighten the mood, she convinces Holly to play a game of Count the Red Cars. But when they arrive home, Mom doesn’t ask Holly how many red cars she saw. Instead, she asks Holly how many yellow cars she spotted.

The game was never really about cars and colors. It was actually a lesson about what you choose to see, and now Holly will never look at life the same way again!

Gina explores how easy it can be for kids to become so fixated on problems and disappointments that they ignore or simply miss all the good, funny, and joyful things that are happening around them.

This book includes a special page written specifically for parents and educators offers insights and practical tips on helping children find more joy each and every day.

Joy! You Find What You LookFor is the first title in the Holly’s Choice book series. Written for young children ages 5 to 11, the series is designed to empower children to live with more joy, hope, and love.
